I can’t believe I’ve only been in the
Philippines
for two weeks! It seems like much longer than that!
Perhaps it’s because I feel so at home. I think that island life
suits me, though it took some getting used to. Life here is very
relaxed; Pastor Al is constantly telling us to rest, while we are
constantly asking for things to do. We are the third group to come
here, and the second World Race team. They don’t always
know what to do with us…

This weekend is the start of both the
volleyball and basketball tournaments, so I’m definitely looking
forward to that. Until then, we’ve been clearing what will one day
become a soccer field. A couple of days ago, it looked more like a
little jungle. At times, it feels like we’re trying to remove all the
trash from a garbage dump, and all the rocks from a gravel pit, while
providing free breakfast for all the fire ants whose homes we just
destroyed. Did you know that spiders come in a wide variety of sizes
and colours and like to climb up legs?

At first, I was getting discouraged
because it felt like we weren’t being productive. But then God
reminded me that I’m here to serve Him. It doesn’t matter what I’m
doing, or how I’m doing it, so long as my heart is in the right
place. This soccer field will be a safe place for the community to
gather and have fun. It’s right next door to the pastor’s house, and
just down from the church, so who knows what opportunities will arise
once we’re gone.

My job is not to be impatient. My job
for the moment is to pick up garbage, collect rocks, and burn brush
in the hot sun… and to do it with a big smile on my face.
