Epic journeys always involve dynamic characters. That is what makes great books and great movies. That’s why we all get wrapped up in them – we love the characters!
Throughout the year, I hope to bring you stories of epic characters. Maybe it will be the story of an orphan in Africa. Maybe it will be the story of a prince in India. This is the story of a visionary and his vision.
Jeff Goins is a 23-year-old follower of Christ, originally hailing from Chicago, Illinois. Through a sequence of “coincidences” over the past couple of years, Jeff’s passion for both writing and abundant life in Christ collided with Seth Barnes’ dream of an electronic magazine that will awaken hearts. Thus,
Wrecked was born.
Wrecked for the Ordinary is an E-Zine directed primarily towards 20-30 something’s immersed in American post-modernity. At its core,
Wrecked is a call to action. “It’s really about sharing stories of radical living that will activate others to live in their destinies and in abundant life,” Jeff explained while meeting up with the January ’07 Racers in Mexico. The E-Zine is not limited to the World Race, though it is likely that Racers will consistently contribute their stories to the E-Zine that shares their heartbeat.
Wrecked seeks to “re-imagine culture,” Jeff explained. The tagline reflects that mission; “We do not seek what is, but what should be.” It’s about seeing the world they way Jesus would want it to be. This vision is broken into six main areas.
· Culture: connecting to the world around us
· Arts: embracing the beauty of life (music, computer art, etc)
· Community: living life together
“This is based on the basic need of every person to know and be known by someone else, and this doesn’t always happen in our churches. It’s a choice [to build authentic community with others],” Jeff explained.
· Poverty: the priority of the “least of these” (the widows, orphans, poor, homeless, and hurting…)
“It’s like Shane Claiborne [
The Irresistible Revolution] says, it’s not that the Church doesn’t have compassion for the homeless, it’s that they don’t
know the homeless.”
· Simplicity: simple living
