I
love watching movies. What began as a procrastination technique in college has become one of my favorite passtimes. I laugh hysterically at Nemo, become a child again in Finding Neverland, and fall in love with Mr. Darcy (every time). My favorite movie is A Few Good Men. (“You can’t handle the truth!”) If you haven’t seen it, please go rent it right now.
I love movies because they can wrap me up in another world. Most of the time, the world I get to be a part of in the movie seems so much bigger than my own. My life can seem mundane, routine. Most movies, however, tell stories of great adventure, daring risk, and love that conquers all.
Isn’t there something inside all of us that longs for something more in our lives? “Epic” is defined as “surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope or size.” I believe that our lives are meant to be epic. Perhaps this is why I connect with the characters in the movies who play irreplaceable roles in the story, whose lives are part of a grand journey.
One of the best onscreen journeys I have watched is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I know some people who love the story (and secretly wish they were Aragorn). I know others who fell asleep in the theater. For me, the LOTR movies swept me up in an epic-sized adventure.
That is why I have chosen to incorporate some of the LOTR story into my own. Over the course of the next year, I have the opportunity to take you on a great adventure. As an underlying theme of my blog entries, I will explore the idea of the “epic journey.” I will share stories of modern-day heroes and comedic pitstops on our travels. I will reveal parts of the world to you that you may never have seen, and I will reveal to you parts of my heart.
Do not worry if you have never read or watched The Lord of the Rings. While I will reference the story, and possibly give away parts, I will not require any previous LOTR knowledge. 🙂 You will still be able to follow along with my blogs! I am no LOTR expert myself (I haven’t even read the books!) I simply admire Tolkien’s heartbeat, and I believe that parts of his imaginary world can open our eyes to the epic in us.
This blog is for everyone. But most of all, it is for all of us who, deep down, believe that the big is not only found on the big screen. It’s for those of us who refuse to accept the ordinary. It is for those of us who believe that our lives are epic journeys.
