When I was younger, my mom always gave me warm milk and honey when I couldn't sleep or was having a bad day. As I got older, I made myself this delicious, warm beverage fairly often. I don't know why, but I do not sleep well. I haven't slept well in a long time. Back home, waking up around 2 am and making myself some warm milk and honey to help me get back to sleep was a fairly common occurrence.
On the race, I haven't had access to warm milk and honey. So whenever I can't sleep I just lay there with my eyes closed hoping and praying I will fall back to sleep.
The very first thing I was given upon arriving to my new house in Rwanda was warm milk. I poured myself a glass and added a bit of sugar and enjoyed every last sip of it. I slept like a rock that night. 🙂 That was probably the best "Welcome to your new home" I have had yet!
Another thing that is very comforting is the noise… I grew up in Virginia Beach, VA which is a military town so there are jets flying over my house and my work all the time. During the past 6 months, I have realized that I really miss the jet noise. I used to want to fly planes and I loved going to Air Shows every year when I could. Currently, I am living by the Rwandan Airport in Kigali. Planes pass by all the time! I love jet noise!!
I just know that I am going to love this month. Two of my favorite things are teaching and going to church. And those are two things I get to do just about every single day. The mornings are spent at the school where we play with, sing to and teach about 70 children ages 3-6. In the afternoon we get to evangelize until it is time for church. I absolutely love the churches I have been to so far.
I am so happy here. Everything has been wonderful. Oh, and the weather is fantastic! 85 degrees and sunny with cooler nights. Our contact said we are hear during their hot/dry season and I thought this was the cooler season! I can tell I am going to have a great month!
On another note..
I was just reading a letter that I wrote to myself back when I had made the first financial deadline and I had $3,600 in my account. It was funny how well I knew myself. I asked myself if I was journaling, because I know how bad I am at it. I laughed because I am two weeks behind, not to mention the several months I went without journaling. I also asked myself what my first meal was, which was grilled cheese in Costa Rica. And then I really started laughing because I asked myself if I had peed or pooped myself yet, which I had done both since writing this letter. I peed my pants (just a little) at training camp while star tripping. And I pooped my pants three times in Honduras. (Am I really sharing two of my more embarrassing moments on the race on a blog that can be viewed by anyone? Oh gosh..)
I say all of that because now I am in need of $3,600 to be fully funded. I am so close! There were many people who never would have thought I could make it this far and now I am almost fully funded. I might be able to raft the Nile at the end of next month!! But I have to be fully funded. I might be able to spend a month with orphans (which is a passion of mine!) But I have to be fully funded to be able to do that. I might be able to take a ride on the world's highest rope swing in Nepal! Or go on Safari in Kenya!! My favorite animals ever are African Elephants. I even know their scientific name… loxodonta africana.. No, I didn't look that up just now. That used to be my email address. loxodonta89@something but I don't remember if it was gmail or yahoo. I might be able to get to meet an African elephant!! I could see the Taj Mahal!! But I need $3,600 for all that.
Please pray for provision and please share this blog by emailing to people or posting it to your time line on facebook or sharing it on twitter.
Oh, and what do you want me to blog about? Do you have any questions or topics you would like me to write about? I will write about anything! Just let me know by commenting or emailing!! 🙂
Much love from Rwanda!!!
