2:00 am – 4:00 am: Lay awake in a two person tent sweating, listening to dogs bark and the neighbors music.
4:00 am – 6:00 am: Drift in and out of sleep, jolting awake every so often, when the roosters crow, convinced I have over slept. Venture to the hole in the ground and wake up the maggots.
6:00 am – 8:00 am: Sweetest part of my day…quiet time with the Lord and a bucket shower every third or forth day.
8:00 am – 10:00 am: Breakfast with my team. We partake of fresh made rolls with either jelly, butter, peanut butter, some combination thereof or, on special occasion, a fried egg. Once showers are done, we take turns hand washing clothes in the aforementioned shower bucket. One bucket. 10 people. We have become excellent sharers.
10:00 am – 2:00 pm: Anything goes! A couple times a week I will coordinate a ride over to the ministry site of other World Race Team in Beira to work on Logistics. The remaining days we either participate in prayer walks to widows homes throughout the village, to the land where the future orphanage will be built, or venture to a construction site where we are assisting with a home building project. We have also embraced one time opportunities like helping with the photography of a wedding party, participating in a field day for local orphans and baking cakes for Christmas. Candidly, we never really know what each day will bring.
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Lunch and an African siesta. Lunch is usually some combination of one or two of the following: rice, beans, potatoes, fish, fried chicken, coleslaw, chips (fried potatoes) or fried eggs.
4:00 pm – 9:00 pm: Team time. Some days we workout, other days we run into town to shop for supplies or to go to the grocery store – for fun. Who knew going to the grocery store would become a treat!
9:00 pm – 11:00 pm: Dinner in similar combination to lunch and team feedback to debrief on the day.
11:00 pm – 2:00 am: Coax myself to sleep telling myself I will stop sweating, someday.
