Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Quick point of confession, I realized today the only thing I know about Saint Patrick and his day is that I am supposed to wear green. That’s it. I don’t know who Saint Patrick is or why he is such a fan of beer or if he ever really did run a 5k from pub to pub. Maybe when I get back to the States someone can educate me on his Irish ways.

We’ve been talking a lot about color this month. You see, one far wittier than I introduced me to the idea of “pink” jobs and “blue” jobs. I shared this with the team and the concept has become a part of our regular dialog. This is because our ministry this month and Serbia in general definitely subscribes to a color driven line of thinking. The women here care for the home, raise the kids and keep everyone well fed. The men work, take out the trash, lift heavy things and fix stuff.

What I appreciate is that they are not staunch. The color wheel is a guide. In short they also allow for purple. Case in point, the day after we arrived I partook in a chocolate cake our host made for his wife to celebrate all she does for the family. The man can bake! A few days after the cake I witnessed a group of women brilliantly problem solve a little lack of electricity issue we had about an hour before dinner time that could have wrecked havoc on our cooking casserole.

While we tease as a team about whose turn it is to take out the trash, do the dishes, or cook dinner it has been fun to discuss pink and blue and decide amongst ourselves where we believe in purple. Speaking for myself, I am comfortable with pink, capable of blue, but a big fan of purple based on time and talent.

Perfectly Pink – Ash and Rebecca showing off one of our concoctions for the studious pastors.

Basically Blue – The guys flexing their muscles chiseling out space to lay electrical wire in the under construction church. And of course, power tools!
