Here is a
brief glimpse of my first two and a half
days of the world race…
June 28th
Maithili wakes up courtesy of the best or worst alarm clock known to man…mom. In my case, it’s the best. We bustle about getting things sorted. We said a
tearful goodbye at the airport. Then I took off for Atlanta. I spent about the next 12 hours
flying or waiting in airports for layovers. In Miami I joined up with the rest
of my team for the world race. Two of my wonderful team mates had a hotel for
the night and they allowed my to take a shower…mmm I don’t know what can feel
better after traveling for a entire day. The rest of the team spent the night
in the Miami ariport. I do recommend the second floor for such an activity as
it is more quiet, less bright and not as populated. As it was, I may have
gotten a couple hours of sleep for the 12 hours were there.
June 29th
We fly to
Mexico city and had about 5-6 hours lay over. A few of us were going to go out
into the city, but upon further questioning of the locals determined that we
did not have enough time for such an adventure.
we took off for Cancun and I had a very enjoyable flight, or at least I did. I
was able to have a row of three seats to myself and they served us a meal! For
FREE!
up our bags and after a bit of confustion and a couple glitches (we were supposed to have our first ¨race¨ to palenque from the airport but our team accounts did not have any money in them) we boarded a
bus for Palenque. It was about this time that everyone in our group was
vigorously thinking through their packing list to see what they could do with out.
You see this entire time each of us has been lugging about a 50lb back pack
with about a 25lb carry on plus a purse in hot hot weather! Quite
uncomfortable.
ride went through the night but about and hour before reaching our destination
our bus broke down. We spent about 3 hours waiting for repairs to be made.
Finally we all got into two taxis and made our way into town where we met up
with our team contacts. Praise the Lord! We finally had made it into Palenque!
