So often we miss God’s miracles in life because we are looking for grand gestures from our creator but if you simply open your eyes, I have a feeling you will begin to see them daily.
I guess I had the notion that Adventures in Missions would have a detailed plan on getting us between locations but by month two I realized that this was not the case. AIM purchases our international plane tickets but from there it is up to us. In China this would mean landing in Hong Kong and then our wonderful logistics team needed to figure out how to get us to the other side of China and on a strict budget. I attempted to Google maps the miles between Hong Kong and Lanzhou (a city roughly 4 hours from our exact location in Tibet) but even google maps could not give me an answer stating that they were “unable to calculate directions” (I guess I also had the notion that Google knew everything…).
Despite the odds, we managed to arrive at our location safely and survive the month but I can’t begin to tell you how many times we would pray for something and God would show up, simple miracles, that many people may chalk up to luck, but I know it is much more.
The same sorts of miracles were needed to get to Romania. We first took a two-hour van ride, then a 4 hour bus ride through the border and finally arrived at Johnnesburg airport. We then had a 9-hour flight to Turkey and let me just say that international flights may be one of the best parts of the race because of the free food, movies, wine, airplane blankets and much needed rest.
When we arrived in Romania it was dumping snow and all of us were taken aback by the drastic climate change–summer in Africa to the dead of winter.
Stepping into the train station in Bucharest we realized that it was not heated and the snow kept falling.
We went up to the ticket counter to find a woman who spoke no English and all we could do was pray that she could understand at least the name of the town we needed to get to. After 5 minutes at the ticket counter we realized we were not getting anywhere. Suddenly, out of nowhere, an English speaking woman came to our rescue. Noticing our distress, she took 20 minutes out of her day, even missing her bus, to help us purchase 44 train tickets to various locations throughout Romania. These simple instances seem to happen on a regular basis on the World Race. In times of desperation, God will send someone to help. It may not seem like a large miracle, but for us it was.
