Bola de oro – Bowl of Gold
My team and I take two buses everyday to Bola de Oro. Its about an hour drive and they are always full of life. Our ministry consists of lots of activities with kids and families.
On Mondays we teach English, Tuesday is art day, Wednesday is discipleship, Thursday we have ATL, and Friday is sports day.
In English, we teach kids common american phrases, colors, numbers, the alphabet. Usually pretty simple stuff. Tuesdays are my favorite days though. The day goes slow and I watch kids draw, i get to see their imagination and what goes on in their heads. Paper and colored pencils and markers aren’t really something they have readily available or can even afford. seeing the excitement in their eyes is so beautiful. Sometimes we give them things they can draw or they just kinda draw whatever they want. Wednesdays we teach the kids about Jesus. Most of them already know who he is but we dive a little deeper into who he is and people in the bible that Jesus shines through. Thursdays are intense. ATL stands for ask the lord. and basically what we do is we go to ministry and just ask the lord what’s on his heart today and we live that out. whatever comes to our heads we seek that out and whoever is in our heads, we will seek out in the village. We go to homes and pray over families, bless homes, heal the sick or wounded. Its pretty wack I’m not gonna lie. On Fridays we teach sports. We attempt to teach the kids some games, but it usually just ends up in them running around or playing soccer.
Its pretty crazy. We teach at Josephine’s house, a lovely woman who kindly allows us to teach everyday and at the end of every class fills the kids bellies and my teams belly with atol, horchada, or fresh tortillas. Its a dream. She treats us so well and we are so thankful for her. We have two classes everyday, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon and both are about an hour and a half. In between teaching the kids, we do house visits and pray for people and bless homes. Everyday our class size is different, we never know what to expect. Our morning class is usually pretty small, about 15-20 kids show up, but then comes the afternoon class. ah the afternoon class. Everyday we wait for the surprise of how many children will show up. Most kids are getting out of school so we never know what to expect. Let me just give you and example of what happened two weeks ago:
Keep in mind, we were expecting 60 kids.
On Monday, 70 kids showed up
Tuesday – 80 kids
Wednesday – 90 kids
Thursday – 100 kids
and on Friday – 110 kids
as you can see we went a little over the amount we were expecting. But I love that everyday more kids came. Teaching these kids how to be kids again and just teaching them in general is such a blessing. seeing the wonder and excitement of learning something in English and then understanding it is so fulfilling. For most of these kids lives they’ve had to be the parent for their younger siblings and most of these kids arent even 12 yet.
Our ministry is full of life and overflowing knowledge. these kids come to school everyday eager to learn something new. so this is my ministry, my job for the next 3 months. I could not be more blessed to be doing such amazing things and i thank Jesus everyday for that. Thanks for taking the time to read my blog.
Love, Mady
