Month # 9: Cambodia!

How to explain it?  There is so much joy in knowing there are only around 70 days separating me from America and also a lot of anxiety.  But Asia has places that are very similar to America which makes it a little easier to be away from home.  However, there are also parts of Asia that feel NOTHING like home, and that’s where we are living this month.  A common saying that’s going through the squad, “No one told us Cambodia was in Africa!”  This is definitely what I would call a “bush” month, but the people here make it so much better.

This month we live in a village…well “village” has become a vague term on the Race.  Basically we live back off a dirt road with other houses within walking distance.  The seven of us women live in a one room house right next to our school.  It’s blazing hot and we have only 3 fans for the seven of us, honestly it’s better than some of our teams.  We teach English for 6 hours a day for all different levels of students.  My morning class is kids just learning how to speak English, so we are teaching the Alphabet and simple phrases.  My second class is a little more advanced, I actually taught them Verbs and Nouns the other day!!  At night I help with a Bible study class.

Our contact is pretty awesome.  He became a Christian about 5 years ago and went to work with Youth With A Mission (YWAM).  He trained with them and then had a vision that he would have a school, later he went back to his village and started it up.  As more and more students come, more and more learn about the love of Jesus.  The children in the community are taking what they are learning at school and taking it home.

So even though we sleep surrounded by bugs, our bath water comes from a ditch the cows bathe in and our contact fishes in, we sweat 5 lbs a day, and the closest “store” is a shack that makes coffee in a bag a 5 minute bike ride away, this is going to be an AWESOME month because Jesus is at work!

Also, here is a video of what we did last month.  Love you all!!
