It was Friday morning. Only our second day in Sombor, Serbia.

We started our morning out with a prayer walk through the town. We went back to the church after, where we were asked to clean the entire church. This included: scrubbing bathrooms/toilets/shower, sweeping/mopping the coffee bar area, sweeping/mopping the loft above the coffee bar, vacuuming the stairs/rooms, sweeping all of the rooms with tile, scrubbing paint off of railings and floors, and cleaning the windows and doors. We had 14 people to help clean, so we were sure it wouldn’t take that long. It started out well. We were getting everything cleaned and the church was beginning to look really great again.

After cleaning for about 2 hours, we were beginning to wrap things up when my teammate Alex hollered for me to come upstairs to the loft. I had my broom in hand, that I had been sweeping with all morning. There was a section in the upstairs loft that had a railing around it, and behind it was a part of the floor that was dry wall and there was an easel sitting on it. It was extremely dirty behind there, and since we were cleaning, Alex suggested that I go back there and sweep it. I immediately second guessed her suggestion, but proceeded to walk over to the railing and shake it to see if it was sturdy. It was. So, without thinking, I stepped over the railing onto the dry wall. Next thing I know, I’m falling. The railing was sturdy, the dry wall was not. I fell through the ceiling of the second floor onto a tile floor on the first floor. But that’s not all, one of my squad mates was directly below me when I fell, so he ended up breaking my fall. From his point of view, he had headphones in listening to music, cleaning the door, when the ceiling came crashing down onto his head. You know the saying, “didn’t know what hit him?” He literally didn’t know what hit him in that moment.

No one was seriously injured in the making of this blog.

The only battle wounds received during the fall…

What a way to start the World Race. I am extremely thankful and grateful for the favor of the Lord. and for His protection over my teammate and I. It’s a funny story now, but it was pretty scary when it happened. The Lord is with us and watching over us! It’s going to be a great rest of the month in Serbia with no more incident reports. In Jesus’ Name.
