Living missionally in Cambodia is the same as living missionally anywhere-

ASK THE LORD.

In every country I’ve been to, and everywhere I will go when I get home from the Race, the best way to understand what missions looks like is by asking for guidance from Jesus.

I couldn’t really identify what this skill was until Guatemala, when we were taught extensively on how to listen to the Lord’s voice.

But I think that every person has the capacity to live a life on mission anywhere. The gut feeling that you have to help someone open the door or to carry a burden with someone or to start a conversation with someone you wouldn’t normally- that’s the voice of the Lord. Sure it’s not always a booming voice that says “GO TO NINEVEH” but he’s always speaking to us, and the only way to hear it is to listen.

The Father calls us to a pretty simple life, love Him and love others as ourselves. The practical “how to” can be found by asking him. Of course, there is always a cost, and it’s not always easy.

Listening to the voice of the Lord, is like every other skill in life. The more you practice, the better you get.

As a rule of thumb there are 3 questions to ask to ensure that you are hearing the voice of the Lord when you are asking him anything:

1. Is it good?

All good things are from God, and everything that God asks you will sign up with his character. The first box to check is this, because if you think that God is calling you to sin at any capacity THIS IS NOT THE VOICE OF THE LORD. Sometimes he calls us to hard things, like leaving your family and life for 9 months, but he will never call us to anything outside of his character.

2. Is it in line with scripture?

If you are unsure of whether what he is calling you to do is good or not- because with all things there is for sure a grey area- check it with the Bible. SCRIPTURE is TRUTH and TRUTH is SCRIPTURE. Scripture can provide a clear black and white in most grey areas. If it clearly says “DO NOT DO THIS” I can guarantee that the Lord is NOT calling you to do it.

3. Is it aligning with what other believers have also heard from the Lord?

Still there can be confusion. For example, if I felt that the Lord was calling me to leave the World Race with little to no explanation (because he doesn’t always give us a why when he gives us a what), there would be a lot of pros and cons, and I would have a hard time finding a verse that said “Thou shall not leave the World Race”. In this situation, I would ask leaders, sisters and brothers, and mentors to pray with me and ask the Lord as well. If I am the only one who “hears” it’s time to leave the Race, it is likely this is not from the Lord, but from my own desires.

For the most part, living missionally looks like saying God what do you have for me today?
