This past Saturday I had the privilege of meeting Margaret Feinberg and her assistant Jessica at our annual Christmas brunch. Not only did I have the privilege of meeting them, but I got to pick them up from their hotel and drop them off at the airport. Now, this sounds really awesome and special in theory, but my nerves definitely got the best of me as I drove toward DFW. What if they didn’t like me? What if I said something stupid and had one of my famous “Maddie, back up that truck” moments? What if I got pulled over? What if a flying mammoth landed on my windshield and in a big white flurry and I crashed the car? Yes, these are all things that actually came to my mind. What I didn’t question, however, was what if I couldn’t repeat their starbucks order. And that, my friends, is exactly the predicament I found myself in.
As we pulled up to the drive-thru window I confidently looked back and said “what would y’all like?” Margaret then assured me she would just order it since it was kind of long. I agreed, but in my head I thought well, how complicated could it possibly be? Then out spewed the words “i’ll have a non-fat quad venti latte with no foam, no room, heated to 140°, and a Venti straw. Y’all, she was right! I could have never repeated that. Twenty minutes later we were at my church and as Margaret was preparing for her time speaking I asked her what in the world her drink was, and if she could she write it down for me so I could look like a super in the know coffee drinker, too! She let me write it all out and then asked if I wanted to know why all those different things were needed to make the perfect latte. Obviously I said yes!
As she explained how the quad meant they put more espresso in it (which your girl always needs) and how when you say no foam and no room they fill the cup all the way to the top, I got to thinking about how God does the same thing! He has specific orders and plans for our lives that we may think sound absolutely crazy at the time, but when our life (order) is complete, we see that it was crafted perfectly and intentionally.
Romans 8:28 says “And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.” This all boils down to trusting God and his plan, and as Margaret says “we should always remain suspicious that God is up to something good.” So, this week I pray that we would all stay suspicious that God is up to something good. I pray that we would seek out His goodness, share it with others, and stay joyful in all that we do.
