Something I have never been very good at is building relationships with people who I know I won’t be around for very long. I know that after a certain amount of time I’ll leave and probably never see or talk to them again except for maybe being Facebook friends. But my goal while being here in Malaysia is to change that.
Enter Bethel Assembly. These three months my team is living in and working with Bethel Assembly in Sungai Petani. It’s a small Indian church where the majority of the congregation is related and there aren’t a whole lot of words to describe this group of people.
I’ll be honest though, when we first got here I was frustrated. For the majority of the time when we got here, we were stuck at the church with nothing interesting surrounding us and ministry was slow. I was stuck in a small room with five other girls. Then we were told we would be Christmas caroling for three nights.
I didn’t really think much of Christmas caroling and to be honest I wasn’t that thrilled about it either. Over the course of three nights, my entire perspective was changed about our ministry. During those three nights, I came to know the majority of the church, which is mostly family that loves to dance and laugh, and I participated in a different style of Christmas caroling. In three nights, I have come to love Bethel Assembly, their extremely big family and their beautiful culture.
During the short time I have been here, I have realized several things I want to improve on. One of them being building relationships, which I know will be easier being surrounded by my new church family.
