112 hours of travel days.
Saturday:
5:30 a.m. – Wake up. Finish the last of my packing. Load the bags in the car.
6:00 a.m. – Everyone gets in the car and we drive to Kiev.
6:30 a.m. – Go to sleep.
9:00 a.m. – Stop to eat breakfast and restroom break.
11:30 a.m. – Give up on sleeping because the roads in Ukraine are horrible!
2:00 p.m. – Stop to eat lunch and stretch our legs.
4:15 p.m. – Arrive at our hostel in Kiev.
4:45 p.m. – Move to our new hostel in Kiev.
5:00 p.m. – Say goodbye to our contact family. Thank them for a wonderful month. Cry.
6:30 p.m. – Find a restaurant to eat dinner.
8:00 p.m. – Arrive back to the hostel. Relax. Get on the computer.
11:00 p.m. – Go to bed.
Sunday:
6:00 a.m. – Wake up. Brush teeth. Finish touches on packing.
6:30 a.m. – Walk to the other hostel with our packs.
6:45 a.m. – Load packs into a van. Take the van to the airport.
7:10 a.m. – Arrive at the airport. Wait for everyone to arrive. Catch up with the other teams.
9:30 a.m. – Go through airport procedures: Check bags, security, passport check, etc.
10:45 a.m. – Board plane. Take off.
11:40 a.m. – Land in Istanbul, Turkey for layover.
12:00 p.m. – Starbucks. English magazine. Rest.
4:00 p.m. – Exposure team arrives.
7:10 p.m. – Board plane to Africa.
Monday:
2:00 a.m. – Land in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
2:10 a.m. – Get visas for 40 people.
3:30 a.m. – Tell the other teams goodbye. Load our packs into the bus.
4:15 a.m. – Arrive at our hotel. Have complications with the prices.
4:30 a.m. – Lay around in complete exhaustion.
6:00 a.m. – Receive our room keys. Run to the room. Sleep.
4:30 p.m. – Wake up. Shower. Eat lunch/dinner. Team time.
7:00 p.m. – Go back to bed.
9:00 p.m. – Stomach pains are too bad to sleep.
11:30 p.m. – Still laying in bed. No sleep. Exhausted. Praying for people around the world.
Tuesday:
1:ish a.m. – Fall asleep.
4:30 a.m. – Wake up. Take packs to the entrance of the hotel. Wait for the bus.
6:00 a.m. – Still waiting for bus.
7:00 a.m. – Still waiting for bus. Lay down and fall asleep.
11:15 a.m. – Wake up. Bus arrives. Load all packs and people in the bus.
12:00 p.m. – Listen to iPod. Sleep. Play games on iPhone.
4:00 p.m. – Take pictures of the baboons, zebras, elephants, and giraffe we see while driving.
6:30 p.m. – Take pictures of the amazing sunset.
7:00 p.m. – Everyone sleeps.
11:15 p.m. – Bus stops. Road police check the bus, ask questions, and holds us in place for an hour.
Wednesday:
2:30 a.m. – Bus stops for two hours so the bus driver can sleep.
7:30 a.m. – Drop one of the teams off at their contact. Bathroom break.
8:00 a.m. Arrive at the bus stop. Buy tickets. Wait to get on new bus. Breakfast: banana and pb.
10:30 a.m. – Get on new, crowded bus.
11:15 p.m. – Absolutely no sleeping, welcome to African roads!
1:25 p.m. – iPod dies. Extreme boredom sets in.
2:00 p.m. – Lunch: bread and peanut butter.
2:05 p.m. – Read book.
3:10 p.m. – Bathroom break on the side of the road.
4:00 p.m. – Make faces with the baby in the seat in front of me.
4:45 p.m. – Talk to the men standing in the isle. Give one man a Bible. He says only two more hours.
5:15 p.m. – Eat pretzels. Share with the boy sitting close to me.
6:30 p.m. – Watch the sunset.
7:15 p.m. – Try to play a word game to pass time and distract from the horrible roads and exhaustion.
9:30 p.m. – Arrive at the Sumbawanga bus station.
9:40 p.m. – Meet our contacts. Pack bags into van. Drive to house.
10:00 p.m. – Arrive at the contacts house! Drag myself to bed. Sleep.
