I sat in a crowded movie theatre with my sister from another mister, Melissa watching The Prince of Persia starring Jake Gyllenhaal, I don't remember quite remember why I decided to go to this movie but atlas I was there being entertained, partially.
As the film rolled displaying action packed adventure, survival, and a whirlwind travel across nations, a thought fell heavily upon me. "I want that…I really want that… I want to travel across nations on some grand adventure, I want to see the world. But all I am doing is sitting here. That's all I'm doing…sitting." What first prompted this desire was bordeom; I was tired of the mundance and I wanted more. Second, I was drawn to the intent of Gyllenhaal's character. He wasn't travelling across these desert lands without purpose or even for pleasure, he was travelling to rescue people. So I asked myself, "Why can't I do that?"
I sat there a moment and then prayed, "Lord, take me one some grand adventure. I don't know what that will look like but I want to go, across nations and desert lands…"And that was it, until later that evening.
After the movie, Melissa, who is now also doing the World Race :), and I went back to my house. We sat on my bed talking about random things like youtube videos and the movie we just watched and friends. Melissa shared with me about a friend of hers who was considering doing a missions trip called The World Race.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Let's go online and check it out."
That night we stalked the World Race website and I was SOLD.
11 countries in 11 months. You live out of a backpack, travel from country to country, sometimes you live in a tent and you take something like 10 pairs of underwear for almost a year. You're placed on a team of people, you live together for a year and with them you go to serve the people of the nations you visit.
In my spirit I knew this was the answer to my silent prayer I said in the movie that night.
And that is how the World Race adventure began….
