So it is actually true, the statement that African children captivate your heart…
It is the eyes I think, the vast eyes that captivate you as they stare straight into yours. I would be lying if I said that I have not made comments about stealing them. I would take one with me but considering the time I have left on the race it would be too difficult for the child.
As we walk along side of the road, I continuously hear “how are you?!”. The children get so excited to see what they call a “Mzungu” (one who speaks English). The children smile so beautifully towards us while simultaneously hesitating. I hear Swahili spoken all around me and laugh when I hear the word Mzungu because I know they are talking about us.
Kenya has been so memorable since arriving a couple of weeks ago. We have once again made a home and this time in Kenya. We live in a village in a town called Busia. We are living in a house with the children of a family here in town. The children are Claire, Steve, Dennis, who are all around my age, and Brian who is twelve. (back story on Brian) I was washing my clothes in the backyard the other day and Brian grabbed a knife and a chicken that was running around in the yard, went around the house and came back with a dead chicken…welcome to the world race.
We are well taken care of here with their truly unique hospitality and the delicious food made by who we like to call Chef Lucas. He cooks breakfast and dinners for us which have been so tasty and he has quite the unforgettable personality.
We immediately got involved in the church here which looks different each Sunday. The first Sunday we were here I preached about God being on a journey with us. This past Sunday Caitlin preached and Jordan, David, Catherine, and I had the opportunity to sing one song which was a lot of fun. The congregation at Deliverance Church is lively, energetic, and encouraging. The congregation naturally sings and dances so it is an experience any time you attend. I often just look around the church as people praise God and that in itself is encouraging. The African spirit is faithful and true to the God that we serve and is a spirit that joyfully worships and serves.
We did construction on an office building the first week we were here and had an orientation today for evangelism this week. The evangelism will consist of door to door outreach so pray for us in that. We are happily serving in Busia this month and we ask that you will continue to pray for our team of 14 as we go out and share the gospel. Pray that people find the true desire of their heart and that God uses us in mighty ways. Most of all, pray that He is glorified.
side note : pictures will come in time but do to relatively slow internet connection I cannot give them to you at this time 🙂
Thank you for everything.
UPDATE : My route has changed again which means that instead of going to Uganda next month we are going to Tanzania. In August we will go to Uganda and finish up the last week in Ireland for debrief. We will then move on to Romania in September, Ukraine in October and then in November finish up the race in Moldova. We still have quite a bit of time left but it is ending quickly. Pray for us.
