The world is lacking godly men. That’s the simple truth. Society so often tells us as men “Graduate high school, go to college, get a degree, find a job, work your way up to top, make money, retire and enjoy life.” And there’s nothing wrong with any of those things. But most people who spend their entire lives chasing after the “American dream” never wake up. They work countless hours, put in the overtime, get the promotions, but they’re never satisfied.
I wonder how many men can say they have never heard one of the following:
“Man up”
“Suck it up”
“Toughen up”
“Get over it”
“Emotions show weakness”
We’re taught that masculinity is based on your job, how hot your girlfriend/wife is, what car you drive, or how much money you make. We’re taught not to show weakness, because it makes you less of a man. We’re taught to put our needs above the needs of others, and to do whatever it takes to satisfy them.
As men of God, we are called to life different lives than the rest of the world. This doesn’t mean that we don’t go to school or pursue a well paying job. However it does require us to focus our attention on other things. We are called to love God and love people. We are called to be leaders, but to lead out of love, honor, and respect. To treat people as our equal, because we are all sons and daughters of the Most High King. We are called to give generously with our time and possessions. We’re called to trust the Lord in every aspect of our lives, even our finances. Most importantly, we’re called to make an impact for the Kingdom of God. For some of us, that looks like humbly serving our employees and showing them the tangible love of the Father. For some of us, that looks like teaching and coaching, but making sure that we see our students and players as people first. For others, it looks like traveling around the world for 9 months on a mission trip to spread the Good News (If you’re reading this blog looking for a sign, here it is)
Can you imagine what it would look like if men of God began to arise in our schools, political system, offices, and streets? What could be accomplished for the Lord? How many people would hear the Gospel? How many people would see what it means to truly follow Christ?
Men of God, I’m calling you out. Step up.
