This month in Ecuador, my team is working at a camp for children and adults with both physical and mental disabilities. Upon arrival for “orientation” we took a 10 minute tour of the campus and then jumped right into ministry. You know what they say, experience is the best teacher.
We started by helping the campers eat, which was a task in it of itself. And what goes in, must come out. After lunch, we brushed the campers’ teeth for them and laid them down in their beds and next came the fun part: changing diapers. I had never changed a diaper before, but I’m not a wimp so I jumped right in and learned. The first one was a boy who was about 8 or 9, and thanks to my teammate Grace for teaching me how, it went smoothly. The next one was a 22 year old man, and let me tell you, there was so. much. poop. But once again with the help of Grace, we got it done.
The whole time I kept a straight face and acted tough, because once again, I’m not a wimp. But the all I could think about was how gross changing a dirty diaper was. While I was in the process of cleaning this man’s mess, the Lord spoke to me. He told me that as dirty as I thought this diaper was, I was so much more dirty before His grace. And He being the loving Father He is, came and cleaned my mess completely. As we return to this camp for the next 2 weeks, I would imagine that I will change the same diapers many a time. But the incredible news about the Lord is that when we accept his grace given to us so freely, He wipes us clean completely for every single sin we have committed, and even the ones we are going to commit. He wipes us clean from all of our mess one time and we are clean in His eyes.
