Hey everyone!
I think it’s time for an update. I apologize that it’s been so long, but I’ve struggled to find anything worth writing since my last post. But I sure do have something for you today.
At training camp, we discussed how we could sit and listen to the Holy Spirit. I knew that. The Holy Spirit spoke the World Race into my thoughts the night I made my commitment, however, it had been awhile since I had felt his presence since then. Well, since this isn’t the point of the story I wanted to tell you about, I’ll cut to the chase. During one of the worship sessions later in the week, I felt the Holy Spirit acknowledge his presence in my thoughts. That was huge for me, because I had been struggling with it for so long. Again, this isn’t the point I’m getting at, so I’m going to fast forward to last week.
We are working with Park Community Church here in Chicago. Last week, we were being taught how to evangelize and create relationships with those of different cultures and religions. Well, many of us didn’t agree with some of the “methods” being taught and were somewhat struggling with how they wanted us to go about evangelizing. Well, the Holy Spirit went to work. We were waiting for the bus outside of a Lebanese restaurant where we just finished attempting to evangelize. It was cold and raining pretty hard. After a few moments of messing around with my teammates trying to kill time, I noticed a homeless man laying on a bench across the street. There was no hesitation, no nervousness, no fear. I told my teammates, “I think I’m going to give that homeless man my rain jacket,” and then I was doing it. I took it off, and I ran over to him. I made my teammates miss two buses because I ended up talking with him for several minutes. His name is Sunni. He has a strong accent, so it’s a little difficult to understand him, but he said he was left here by someone. He didn’t really specify who that someone was, but he’s from Philadelphia. Anyways, I’ve been back to see Sunni several times since that encounter. With my dad‘s help, we were able to get him some warmer clothes and some supplies for the winter. Sunni could not have been more thankful. I will provide another update about Sunni hopefully before we leave Chicago!
Now for the lesson in all this.
There‘s no “method” to spreading the good news of Jesus. If we try to do that on our own, we will fail most times. BUT, if we just simply listen to the Holy Spirit and let him guide us, we will notice more success in reaching our lost brothers and sisters. You see, the Holy Spirit broke my heart for Sunni. He called me to help him. And now, he we are a week later in the beginning stages of friendship.
I’m not telling you all about Sunni so I can get attention and your gratitude for helping a homeless man. I want you all to make the realization that I made so you can let the Holy Spirit work through you! Evangelism shouldn’t be an activity you go out and do. You shouldn’t have to practice. The Holy Spirit should guide you in spreading the good news everywhere you go!! If hearing the Holy Spirit is something you struggle with, that is something you should start praying about!
If you want to talk more about my experience with the Holy Spirit and how I started to hear him, leave a comment or shoot me an email at [email protected].
Thank ya’ll for coming by and checking out how the Lord’s been working in my life! Much love my friends!
p.s. I received Sunni’s consent to share a photo of him and to share a little about him. I thought it’d be nice for ya’ll to see him.
