I learned a lot of things while in Australia. Here are some I thought were fun and interesting:

There is a tropical side to Australia
and during the wet season (now), you rarely stop sweating.

Darwin has some great thunderstorms,
and the pouring rain makes for a great time to play ultimate frisbee.

Aussies eat several times a day, and
really like bread and butter. We had breakfast, morning tea, lunch,
tea and supper every day.

Aussies like flavored milk; we
definitely need the coffee flavor in America, it’s delicious! Other
flavors are your classic chocolate and strawberry, plus banana.

Aussies like to shorten words –
brekkie (breakfast), aircon (air conditioning), cupa (cup of tea)

Termites are amazing creatures with the
ability to build things larger than me!

They have better pillow cases that
actually fold over the end of your pillow rather than staying open on
one end.

How to landscape and install a
sprinkler system.

How to fold fitted sheets, or rather
roll them.

How to fold papers correctly so the
edges are perfectly lined up.

They have a different perspective on
the double-dip cone (and they have K-Marts).

Vegemite is good for you – but only
in small quantities – however I’m still not a fan.

Kangaroos and koalas have really soft
fur. (See a previous post for pics of this.)

Kangaroos are like deer in our area of
the country. They are everywhere out in the bush.

Kangaroo meat is tasty and good for you
– low in fat and cholesterol!

How to feed and hold a crocodile –
yikes!

Also, not to
swim where crocs can get you.

It’s important to wear a hat when
outside and lots of sunscreen – if you don’t sweat it all off.

How to swim by waterfalls and jump off
rocks.

How to ride in an Aussie saddle

That pigs will eat anything.

That nylon watch bands really stink
after you wear them while sweating for days in a row.

It’s extremely hot and sticky riding in the back of a van.

My fingernails grow much faster here –
not sure why

A didgeridoo is an instrument used by
the Aborigines to call up spirits.

Aborigines really need Jesus.

One thing I wish I learned:

How to throw a boomerang – I really
wanted to get one to keep but didn’t want to carry it for 9 more
months. I did learn that these were used by the Aborigines to kill
birds.

What’s Next?

Our team is now heading to the
Philippines. Originally, we were planning on Malaysia, but we weren’t
able to get enough contacts there. So, we are spending March in the
Philippines instead. Our first few days will be in Manila. Our squad
is meeting there for a debrief. After that, we’ll learn our location
for ministry. Please be praying for safe travels!
