Saturday night some of my teammates and I took a weekend to get out of the city of Bangkok. We headed south to a beach called Hua Hin. Adam and I unpacked then headed down the road to where we heard some live music. As we were sitting there enjoying the music and each other’s company, a boy selling candy came and bombarded us.

By the looks of it he probably hadn’t showered in a while and wouldn’t be able to come home unit he sold all of his candy. I’m going to call him Edward because we have no clue what he said his name was in Thai. Edward was not familiar with being shy. He was climbing all over us, smashing his head into our armpits, and quite honestly acting just like a little brother would.

As Adam and I are playing with him and getting lost in reciting our ABC’s, we couldn’t help but notice everyone looking at us. What seemed like a simple act of kindness turned into an audience questioning our sanity. When we would look at someone they would give us a smile of pity as if we had no clue what was going on with this kid. Edward jumped off my lap and soon realized that his time being a kid was over and he would have to finish selling his candy. With that he ran off to another table, hand wide open, where people paid no attention to him.

I had more fun that night than I did at the beach the next day. In that moment with Edward the Lord just broke our hearts for him. He became the most important thing in our lives in those twenty minutes.

I think about kids like Edward that don’t have many chances to be a kid. I hope he remembers that there was something different about us. I hope that he searches for the reason behind that random love.
