Water is a precious natural resource. It is essential for life. Most of
us do not know what it is like to struggle to find clean water. But this
is a reality for so many, including our friends at Camp Vision.
Water Facts:
-
The average American uses 180 gallons of water each day to cook, clean
and drink. The average African person struggles to find 5 gallons of
water each day. - Only 61% of Kenya’s population has access to an improved drinking water source
-
On average, women in rural Africa spend 26% of their time each day
collecting water (http://www.410bridge.org/help-kenya/water-for-kenya/)
Camp Vision’s Current State:
-
Someone donated a 5000-liter water tank, but there is no water in it,
nor is any water being pumped to it currently. Also, no one in the camp
can afford to buy and install pipes in order to tap into the water
source in the larger IDP camp. Camp Vision is waiting on the man who
donated the tank to come back and supply the piping and install the
system - There are 3 water tanks in the overall camp, but 0 in Camp Vision
-
The water in these tanks is not very clean (see picture to the right)
- People in the camp have to walk nearly a mile to access one of these water tanks
- There is no well nearby in any of the camps
Project Goals for Water:
- Easily accessible (no more than a milefrom the camp)
- Provides for nutritional and hygiene needs
- Low cost to use and maintain
- Locals maintain this resource and manage the funds/upkeep
- To develop a partnership with a water organization
Our end goal is that Camp Vision will have a reliable, sufficient,
clean, and accessible water source (a well or water tank) that they
maintain. A life necessity that is scarce in this community will one
day be an easily accessible resource.
