Patience has never been one of my strengths. I’m always counting down the days to something: Christmas, my birthday, vacation. Heck, I’ve been counting down to graduation since last May (163 days, by the way).
Waiting until next September for the World Race brings its own difficulties. It makes me anxious, frustrated, sad.
I’m not worried about being away from home while I’m actually gone. I think I’ll be pretty busy with ministry, my new teammates, and exploring new countries. But right now, I have a lot of time to think about all I’ll be missing during my nine months abroad. All the holidays, birthdays, game nights, Panera dates… the list is endless.
There was one particular day when I was wallowing in my sadness, and I had a little breakdown. I was all alone, so I FaceTimed one of my friends, who happens to also be going on the Race with me. She spoke life into me, and reassured me that I would be okay and that God doesn’t call us to something that we can’t handle. Of course, she was right and I was just having a bad moment. I know I can handle this next adventure, and God is going to do amazing things that will completely make up for what I’m missing at home.
I was thinking about that conversation a few days later, and realized that I had a little problem. Yes, God called me to the World Race and I know He’ll provide for me. But why didn’t I turn to Him in my time of doubt and fear? How did I expect Him to provide for me without actually going to Him with what I need?
So I opened up my Bible and found Psalm 138:3:
“On the day I called, You answered me; You made me bold with strength in my soul.”
This is what I needed to hear. This reassured me that I am going to be okay.
My goals for these next 255 days before the World Race are to practice patience, and trusting and turning to the Lord in my times of anxiousness, frustration, and sadness. I invite you to join me in this, as it’s important no matter what you’re facing!
