We were asked to write a blog about how we were called to this missions trip, here is my story…
“Go and make disciples of all the nations…”
I grew up hearing this verse and always admired people for being able to GO and DO, but that wasn’t for me. I always thought that God called me to stay here and be a light, I was sure of it. So sure, that I turned down a trip to go to Africa 3 years ago… and that is when the Lord started working on my heart. My freshman year of college I applied to be a BigStuf intern in Florida. During the interview they started asking me questions such as, “could you ever see yourself working with orphans?,” or “do you have a desire to go overseas to share the Gospel?” In short, my answer to those questions was pretty much “NO!” They wanted me to go to Africa for the first year of BigStuf journey. Needless to say, I didn’t go. The next few months, the Lord really worked on my heart. It seemed as though whenever someone said something about Africa my ears would perk up. I felt like I was being drawn there. In February of 2007, I applied to go on the BigStuf journey trip to Kenya, Africa and was accepted. It was definitely evident that I was supposed to go when I had over $10,000 raised in about a month when the trip only cost about $4,000. I was in Kenya for only a month. The Lord stretched me and molded me. Ever since that trip I have had a longing to go overseas again. I have been patiently waiting on God to open the doors to another trip. It is because of that trip that I now have aspirations of organizing and leading mission trips for youth.
Below is a picture of myself and Kirstin, a teammate from that trip, teaching songs to some of the Kenyan girls we met. These girls captured my heart…
