We are in the middle of the Masai Mara. This may be the one and only blog that you receive this month since we are in the farthest removed location I have been in on the Race yet! The only internet source is Pastor Steven's internet stick, so needless to say I will not be accessible this month.
We arrived in Kenya on the 31st of January, taking what we thought was a 12-hour bus ride, that turned into a 17-hour bus ride. After camping out in Nairobi for a couple of days, we climbed aboard a 3-hour bus ride, only to transfer to a safari van complete with leopard-print seats and embarked on a 5-hour bumpy ride into the farthest reaches of the Masai Mara. At each stop we acquired new travelers including a rather uncomfortable looking goat, and men and women that looked like they were straight out of a national geographic magazine. We were definitely the odd ones out and were not any less conspicuous when giraffes, wildebeests and gazelles crossed our path.
We are working with a Pastor Samuel this month who founded the village that we are staying in. There is a school and a church right out side the brick building we are camping out in. It is a bit surreal to wake up every morning to a glorious sunrise, and a herd of cows or goat passing by, guarded by a boy that can not be much older than 10. Water is not guaranteed, and every morning at 7am, the Masai women and children line up outside the only water source for miles to collect their portion of water for the day. Is this real life?
We will be out here until the 24th of February, then back to Nairobi for our 8-month debrief! I promise a picture blog then and much updated information. Until then, Happy February! And much love from Africa!
