I went to school to study engineering. We are talking calculus, fluid dynamics, statics, machining, welding… engineering. The most English I used was to write technical lab reports and, of course, general communication. Engineers are not praised for their impeccable use of grammar or sentence structures.
I have a confession:
I used to make fun of elementary education majors. I know, I know, not very Jesus of me but it sure does help when you are studying for a 4-hour dynamics exam to poke a little fun at the people who have an entire course dedicated to children’s books.
Here is my apology:
Yesterday I had 5 Thais sitting across from me who had shown up with the anticipation of learning English. Our communication had come as far as the awkward initial “Hi, how are you, my name is” and it was time for a real lesson. As I sat there, all I could think about were the many times that while I was learning equations, education majors were learning all the useful information like irregular verbs and conjugations.
The Lord has been teaching me that I literally need Him for EVERYTHING. Even in a language that I have been speaking my entire life. He has called me and has fully equipped me for all His good works. This is the best deal in the world. I give Him my life, literally the only thing I have to give, and He equips me through His word to do His work (2 Timothy 3:17).
In the end it is not about how well I teach, or if they can speak fluently by the time we leave at the end of the month. That task is impossible. We are called to love. We are called to bring the presence of the Lord by just walking on campus and infecting the area with the love of the Father. God is so much bigger than what I label as “impossible” and “possible”. He works in His own timing and His timing is perfect.
