Let me tell you a story…
We have a lot of funny experiences on the World Race. Top of the list right
now is that one time that a bat started flying around during dinner and then we
got locked in the back part of the house. No kidding. So this is what
happened…
The four of us girls came home from ministry while the guys went to hang
out with a friend they met here in Rwanda. Dinner was two hours early for some
reason, so we ate as soon as we got home. As soon as we finished eating, we see
this massive thing flying around the house. And coming really close to hitting
almost all of us. It looked like a very, very, very large butterfly. Or a
regular sized bat…except that it was tan colored. So we all start freaking
out. And run out of the room into our bedroom. We may or may not have screamed
a little.
So Shayna is the last one in so she closed the door to our hallway and
bathroom. What we didn’t realize is that the door locks when it is closed. And
there aren’t any handles on it. So Laura, Jessica, and I are in our room dying
laughing about the entire situation while Shayna tries to get the door open so
that she can get the rest of her stuff from the living room. It was then that
we realized that the door wont open. We were stuck until someone came to get us
out. A little while later our contact and a friend of ours came to our house
and this is how that conversation went down:
Shayna: Hello?
Edward: What are you doing?
Shayna: We’re locked in.
Edward: Why are you locked in?
Shayna: There was a bat flying around so we came in here, but the door is
stuck.
Edward: You can come out now, we put it outside.
Shayna: We cant get out! The door is stuck.
Edward: You want me to push through it?
Shayna: YES!
So Edward got us out and proceeded to laugh at us (a lot) for getting
scared. He claimed the bat was a butterfly and that we had no reason to be
scared. We don’t really believe him. We know that it was a bat.
Just one of those crazy, hilarious times on the race.
