Did you know that prostitution (or any form of human trafficking) is illegal in Thailand? It is, but why is it known as the sex captial of the world? If it is illegal, then how can all that occurs on Bangla Road even exist?
I turn to the government and its officials. As you may have already read in my previous blog, most of the source of women who are trafficked is due to local men and not from tourists. Yes 66% of men in the Bangkok airport are there for sex, yet these men are only 10% of the problem. The remaining men are local men, including many officials.
A blind eye is turned towards this issue. If you do not see it, it doesn’t exist right? Wrong.
Because so many of the officers are involved with problem, they won’t stand up and fight for justice, for they would be hurting themselves. Twisted right?
Every night I see many male officers patroling around Bangla Road to make it a ‘safe place’. I am just left confused and with a loss of words. As these men are walking the streets and weaving in and out of bars, I like to watch their eyes and body language. I see them look girls a third their age and get aroused by it all. I have seen them touch girls that are ‘working’ and get away with anything they want.
So what can we do? In all honesty, I really am at a loss. I know we can pray. Pray that they would no longer turn a blind eye to these issues. Pray for the men involved to see these girls as their daughter, sister and wife. Pray that someone within the governent would rise up, stand firm and fight for the right thing. Pray that the cycle would be broken and for freedom the break out through all of Thailand.
