I am sitting here on my day of rest unable to rest. Tomorrow will be our last day, but I am not so sure I am ready for it or looking forward to it. My time here in the Philippines has truly been a blessing. It feels like home to me. I have made so many relationships and have just started some. I keep walking around, and hear “I will miss you”.
I have heard this from the ladies in the kitchen. They said they would miss me saying “Magadang Umaga” to them every morning and “Can I have some bread with no butter?” Somehow I got the nickname-“Butter Girl” because of this.
I have also heard this phrase from my “Tagalog Teachers”. They said it was such a joy to teach me their native tongue and to see me grow more in love with it the more that I learned. Salamat (thank you) Lola and Rolli for everything. I do not think I have ever learned so much in such a short time with you. More than language, I witnesses your lifestyle of love, passion and endless joy. Salamat.
I heard “I will miss you” from my ‘Ates’. Ate Marilou and Ria have a very special place in my heart. Marilou was the main translator we had for the Census. She was my mom when I was sick, my co-worker in the field, teacher of her language, friend to laugh with and sister to share our deepest struggles with. Ate Marilou, I will always remember you. Though I may be hundreds of miles away, the memories will never leave us and nor will our friendship.
And to my newest friend from Cameroon, it was such a treasure to be able to speak with you in your naitive tongue (French). It was truly a joy and something that I looked forward to everyday. Thank you for speaking with me, sharing your story and pictures of home and for the times we spent reading your French bible. I am truly amazed by your heart and your willingness to obey God no matter where he calls and what you may be leaving behind. Merci beaucoup pour tout!
I leave with so many relationships, yet I know there is hope. Because of this hope, I can trust that God will keep them safe and continue to provide for their every need. I am just so amazed by the simple but so needed act of loving others. Through intentional conversations, small gifts, massages, speaking in anothr language and enjoying people’s company despite of what they may not have-changes the world slowly. So if you feel as if you have nothing give, give of yourself to another. Love the people around you, it is the greatest gift you can ever give.
Maraming salamat po Philippines
