Today God blessed me with a piece of pizza, a dirty diaper (or 3), and a broken heart.
The children living at my current ministry in Guatemala are a mixture of adoptable children, and those whose parents may still gain full custody.
Today, I witnessed first hand the fear and heart break of an "audencia" (court hearing). At 6am I picked up a 2 year old little girl, and traveled with the ministry director to Guatemala City. What is normally a 2 hour drive, took 3 1/2 due to traffic. (one day I will blog about traffic…and then Guatemalan traffic…..)
My little angel had to go to court to see if her mother was suitable to gain full custody. On the way Javier (the director) informed her mother, after having her on the street and leaving her, had never shown up to an audencia. He was optimistic she would not show again, and that baby would be declared adoptable today!
Upon arrival at the court house, I took baby girl into the nursery while Javier attended the main part of the audencia. In the nursery, I attempted conversations with the employees who of course only spoke spanish. Within 5 minutes the ladies believed I was adopting baby girl and bringing her back to the states with me. Bless Javier's heart, he cleared it alllllll up really fast! haha!….let's go with my Spanish needs a little work still
Baby girl was not as open as I was to the employees….However, by the time we left her death grip on me had let up, and she had touched every heart and toy in the building.
Javier quickly exited the building, and I followed cluelessy. He stopped outside the door, pointed back in, and said "The lady in Mayan clothing…..that is her mother"
…….
Over lunch (pizza) I was filled in yet again. The mother had shown up an hour late for the audencia only to say she wanted nothing to do with baby girl……
HUH?
So first she as an HIV+ baby on the street, and then she has the audacity to show up only to say she wants nothing to do with her???
It was then my heart SHATTERED
but then….a mere 5 seconds later baby girls looked up, laughing as she smeared ketchup covered fries ALL over her, and let out a giant, wet fart.
As I changed her, I thanked the LORD for her life, and the chance she now has at the destiny He has planned for her.
Yup… My ketchup covered, poopy diaper, giggly little piece of heaven is now
ADOPTABLE!!!
