They said we would do things this year outside of our comfort zone. Evangelism falls in that category for me. However, when the
opportunity presented itself here in Haiti I knew that I was supposed to go. I knew that God wanted to show me His power and how He draws hearts to Himself. I knew that He wanted me to trust Him to work through me and give me the words even when I didn’t know what to say. He is teaching me to pray like Paul, “…that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make know the mystery of the gospel.” He will give me the courage and the words; all that is required of me is to go.
Twice now He has given me the opportunity to go out with teammates and some of our Haitian friends into the mountains beyond Canaan. I like to refer to it as path evangelism. Every person that walked by us as we climbed the mountain heard the gospel. I was challenged and overflowing with joy as my Haitian brothers boldly proclaimed the love of our Father. As we walked our crowd grew, people were eager to hear truth and to be prayed for. We reminded people of truth and God’s provision. I saw numerous people accept Christ and was able to pray with and encourage many who were already believers. I was broken as I prayed for so many basic needs that I take for granted everyday such as food and shelter.
The Lord really spoke to me though through our translator Jasmin. Jasmin is bold, courageous, obedient, faithful and so in love with the Lord that it radiates through him. You can see it in his smile and his eyes. He is fearless and will engage anyone in a conversation about Christ. We sat and talked with a witch doctor for over an hour about the Lord the other day. This man told us he worshipped idols because that allowed him to have money to feed and clothe his family. He said if Jesus provided this stuff for him then he would follow Jesus. Jasmin literally stood up and took the shoes off of his feet and the shirt off of his back to show this man Jesus. He desperately wanted to see this man set free. Nine years ago a missionary shared Jesus with Jasmin on the streets of Montrouis, Haiti. Jesus captured his heart and changed his life. There is nothing he would rather do than see his people changed and captivated by Christ.
Why and how did the Lord speak to me so much through Jasmin? Really it is simple. If I’m honest, part of me wants to question if an on the spot confession of faith is genuine. Can someone really grasp the Father’s love that quickly and be changed or is it just about not going to hell? Who will follow up with them and disciple them? Jasmin’s life is a testimony that God is so much bigger than I can even begin to wrap my mind around. It is God alone who draws hearts. There are some hearts He will change in an instant and some that may take years to change. He may or may not call us to be a part of the follow up and we may not ever get to see the fruit of the seeds planted. However, we are responsible to go and to proclaim boldly and fearlessly Christ crucified. That alone can change lives.
