Today was supposed to be our day off. The plan was sleeping in, a lazy morning at the coffee shop, and running errands in Leon, but the Lord has much more beautiful plans.

Awake at 6 a.m.; out the door at 6:30. The Kiatera girls and our new friend, Mike, hopped in two taxis and we were on our way. Bumping down the dirt road full of potholes farther and farther into this small rural community. We pulled up to a tiny plot of land with 3-4 adults and about 8 very dirty, half-dressed children. We were surrounded by trash and the stench of urine. The family smiled at us timidly. Today is a big day for them. Today is the day we start building them a real home of their own.

The Lord has opened the door for us to help Mike build a house for this precious family: a single mom and her five children (ages ranging between 5 months-9years). We began digging around the foundation leveling the ground for the house and digging holes for the foundation posts. In Nicaragua this requires 2 shovels, a bucket, a burlap sack, and 2 bowls.

We began by breaking up the ground around the border of the house, shoveling piles of dirt from one end to the other to level out the plot of land. After the ground is relatively level, we began to dig holes at each corner for the foundation posts. This is a hilarious process beginning by merely digging with shovels and ending with someone face down on the ground scooping dirt out of a deep hole with a bowl.

We only spent a few hours with this family and only began the process of building their home, but the Lord opened doors for us to meet this family and opened our hearts to pour out His love upon them. Work was interspersed with laughing with, playing with, and holding these sweet children. Thank You Lord for opening doors and opening our hearts.
