Mozambique is a country in southeast Africa.  It is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest.  Mozambique is a  former Portuguese colony that is seeing signs of redemption and economic recovery in spite of, the extreme poverty gripping the nation.

Facts:

Its capital is Maputo

The official language is Portuguese

The population is approx. 24 million

56% of the population is Christian while 18% are Muslim

Approximately 2.1 million people a year visit Mozambique

History:

In 1500, the Portuguese established a string of forts and posts up and down the coast of present day Mozambique using them to ship spices and slaves until 1891.

After WWI, Portuguese investment in commercial, industrial, agricultural, educational, transportation, and health care infrastructure for the indigenous population started providing for better social and economic possibilities which continued to gain pace up until independence in 1975.
