


Moldova is a land-locked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Ukraine to the northeast and Romania to the southwest.
Facts:
- The capital is Chisinau
- The official language is Romanian but Russian is widely spoken
- The population is approx. 3.5 million
- 98% of the population declare themselves as Orthodox Christians
- Approximately 8,000 people a year visit Moldova with its biggest attraction being it’s wine industry
History:
- Moldova declared independence from The Soviet Union in 1991.
- In 1990 a self-proclaimed Transnistria Republic declared independence from the yet to be formed Moldova and a civil war lasting until 1992 resulted. The republic still occupies the strip of land that boarders Ukraine but and has established it’s own government and currency but is not recognized by any other country.
