Albania is a country in Eastern Europe bordered by Greece to the southeast, Macedonia to the east, Kosovo to the northeast, and Montenegro to the northwest.  It is bordered on the west by the Adriatic Sea and on the southwest by the Ionian Sea.

 

Facts:

  • The capital is Tirana
  • The official language is Albanian
  • The population is 3 million
  • Most of the population declares themselves as Muslim or Catholic but only 30-40% actual attend services
  • Approximately 4.2 million people visit Albania a year many attracted by the beautiful beaches on the west coast

 

History:

  • During WWII Albania was occupied by both Italy and Germany.  At the end of the war Albania was controlled by a communist government which lasted until 1992.  
  • In 1967, Albania was declared the worlds first atheist state.  Mosques, libraries, and churches were destroyed, and preaching religion came with a 3-10 year prison sentence.
