Yesterday we went to an active volcano called Pacaya. We had to hike up a couple of miles in soot, where you feet can’t even get a grip in the soil. We hiked up to a grassy ridge, where we saw an amazing view of Guatemala City, a beautiful sunset, and rolling clouds coming in, at our elevation. And then we looked up… there was more trail marked with white dots. However the trail was on top of black molten lava, the consistency of a pumice stone. And beyond the trail, three streams of bright orangey-red hot lava (magma?… I think magma is when it’s still inside the mountain). So we began our ascent up the lava, and immediately the heat underfoot was overwhelming, yet the brisk air offset the potential to sweat. We walked by hotspots of white and red on either side of us, and some of our group noted that it was just like a scene out of The Lord of the Rings. The clouds encircled us as the sun set, so we were left in the dark on this sweltering ridge. But the clouds reflected the bright lava in brilliant reds. Another experience that God has waited for me to enjoy. And yet, He says there’s more! That’s the exciting part… God wants to show me more of Himself!

It may not always be in nature, but God knows how I experience Him most. And that’s through His creation.
