Sunday afternoon Scott and I took a date day. After church we skipped out on all the new church building ceremonies and headed into the heart of Buenos Aires for a day at the zoo. The night before, we had walked from this area all the way to our hostel, which is about a 6 mile walk. So on Sunday we hopped on the subway, and came out right at the entrance to the zoo. And then waited in line. Sunday seems like a very popular day for zoo-goers.

Once inside we headed straight for the bears… polar bears, spectacled bears, grizzly bears, Fozzie bears. And then off to the elephants, bison, camels, and llamas. This zoo is genius, as people pay to get in, and then they can pay more to feed all of the animals (except the carnivores)… so the zookeepers don’t have to put that much food together. The animals get fed all day long by happy little kids. And happy Scotts. How much fun to actually get to interact with the animals.

It’s almost even more fun to people watch at the zoo. Which kids are the cutest, who’s the most fashionable, who’s made the biggest fashion faux-pas. And there were many of the latter. I’ve never seen so many plumbers, and see through black pants. If they really knew that they were giving everyone a show they’d be thoroughly embarrassed (at least I hope they’d be embarrassed).

It really was a great time for Scott and I, making us miss our dog more and more, but good time to just be ourselves, out of the context of the World Race. That’s our challenge for the next leg, to focus on each other. We’re not really sure what that is supposed to look like in community, but we’re willing to give it a try.
