Growing up, I lived twenty minutes from the beach and loved it. There already wasn’t a ton to do in my home town, but even if there was, I would have still chosen the beach. We went every opportunity we had.
I have always loved water. It started as a kid who loved the pool. I remember just swimming from one side to the other, pausing every now and then underneath the surface, savoring the weightlessness that water provides. The way water removes gravity still perplexes me. I love that feeling.
As I’ve gotten older, big bodies of water have become my oasis. Lakes and beaches bring awe and worship. I find myself staring at the horizons, amazed that there is so much more that my eyes can’t even see.
This morning I was able to experience the beach in a new way. A way that I’ve always desired to experience it. A way that’s more confined, taking my gaze off the horizon and bringing it to the shore. To the waves.
We were out there by 7 with hardly any other surfers around. Our host had us plop down on the sand and practice our technique to push off the ‘board’ and stand. Before I knew it, we were out in the water learning how to surf.
I loved it. It was hard, but so much fun.
I don’t have some long drawn out revelation to share with you. As I sit here typing, I’m just thinking about how crazy it is that we can get on a piece of wood or sturdy foam board and ride a wave. Can we just zoom out and think about that for a moment?
I have a whole new appreciation of the beach and for the ways we can worship and enjoy the Lord in that space.
