So.. India…

I heard someone try to explain India by saying ” take your
expectations or seen in movies about India – the smells, the colors
and the sounds – times it by ten and that still won’t prepare you for
India.” When I heard that I laughed because that seem to be a little
dramatic.

It wasn’t a dramatic statement. At all.

India is loud, colorful, and smells.
Let me break it down for you…

Loud: Unlike the US, here in India people use their horns all the
time. They honk if they are about to pass someone, while they are
passing someone, after they pass someone, when they turn onto a
street, when they turn off a street, if whatever in front of them
(auto, moto, water buffalo, car, truck, or cow) is going slower that
them, or if there is ever a pedestrian present (which is always). And
they aren’t normal car horns either. They are louder, with a higher
pitch , and it isn’t one tone. Normally a horn in India is comprised
of a couple different high pitched tones. So walking down the street a
very loud experience.

Colors: While the land and building aren’t very colorful there is
color everywhere else. The big trucks and autos have a base of yellow
and then flowers or tassels hanging from the grill. Also they have
intricate painted designs on the front, sides and windshields. All of
the women here wear either saris or punjabis which mostly have
beautiful colors and designs. Also as you walk down the streets
outside house entrances you will sometime find calk designs which also
include bright colors and designs. There are so many places to find
colors here in India.

Smells: Smells in India are strong. They don’t really have trash
disposal system here, so everything just gets thrown wherever you want
to throw it. Normally in whatever open lot or little bit of green
space there is. Also there are cows literally roaming the streets and
water buffalo that get herded up and down the main road here so there
is a lot of poo on the streets. So poo plus the smell of rotting trash
equals gross smells. The other main smell is the food. It is sssoooo
good. I never really ate Indian food back in the States because I’m
not a huge fan of spicy foods but the smells that come from Indian
cooking are so good and the food also tastes great as well. As you
walk around the smells from different street vendors is amazing.

Coming to India I didn’t really have that strong of an opinion. I knew
the food would be spicy and I would get stared because I am white. But
I have come to really enjoy it here. Everything just seems to be more
vibrant more intents here.

I like it 🙂
