I was recently asked “how do I deal with the whole Stand Up Toilet
Thing?” I honestly was quite shocked. This thought quickly ran through my head
“Squatty potties aren’t normal? Western sit down toilets are a luxury, squatty
potties are normal.” I was sure that
this woman must be confused.
So I sat there for a while and quickly gathered my thoughts and
rearranged my brain back to the American standard and answered, “Well honestly,
when you go into a situation such as that you quickly forget all of the things
that you once knew to be normal and adapt to your surroundings, what I like to
call “survival mode”. And the more I
think about that question I realize how quickly we adapt to what is around us,
good and bad.
I must say that a common way for our brains to think on the World Race
is called “O-S-ing” EVERYTHING. Which is Over Spiritualizing every situation,
which is exactly what I have done with this potty question.
When we live in a first world country and are overly blessed in every
situation we don’t even think things like a toilet that lets you sit on it and
flushes and is indoors is a blessing, we begin to think these things are
normal. But the problem is there is so much in our society that we think is
normal that isn’t! We are all completely brain washed into thinking that the
things we see and hear everyday are normal or are our freedoms.
This is where the “over spiritualization” happened. We see movies
everyday that make alcohol look harmless, drugs to be normal, divorces to be a
way of life, and sex before marriage, Okay. We hear people talking about things
in our music that we just let slide because “it’s just a song” or we don’t even
notice what they are saying because we are so immune to it.
It’s not normal people. Especially as Christians I don’t think we
realize what it does to us. And I am not trying to be that “legalistic” person
saying you can’t do or listen to anything secular, I am just saying we don’t
realize what it does to our souls.
What have you adapted as normal and become immune to?
