“Jesus fed the 5,000”

Today, the 5,000th loaf of bread was handed out through the Baltic Bread project. What is this project? It was started by a group of YWAM participants in Latvia a few years ago and it’s been on going since then.  Simply put, people go out into the city and hand out fresh loaves of bread to anyone they feel the Lord leading them to. They offer bread, simply claim, “Would you like a loaf of bread? It’s free.” Here are the most common for responses.

1)   “I am too busy.”

2)   “I don’t need it”

3)   “Why”

4)   “Thank you”

When people ask why, we tell them it’s a symbol of God’s love for us. This sometimes leads to longer conversations, while at other times, people seemed surprised, say thank you and walk away.

This project is such a parable for the Christian faith. As missionaries, we see the same reactions to the gospel. People who don’t want it are often too busy for it or suspect of it because of Christians they have met in the past.

It is also a good challenge for Christians. How are we presenting the gospel? Are we offering them a religion, or are we simply offering the love of Christ? Are we forceful, or do we have something good that we just want to share with others?
