We have officially made it from South East Asia to Southern Africa and already, I am learning so much!
If you have ever seen the movie “Blood Diamond”, you may remember the saying of Leonardo De Caprio “TIA” meaning
This Is Africa! If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I highly recommend it (but please note, it is quite the eye opener and not for the weak of heart).
*Everyone in South Africa speaks English (but the accent is strong!)
*There are MANY different cultures here too—much like LA—I should feel right at home!
*Safety is key—I spent the first full day in Africa in an ER unit with my friend who hurt her knee and oh the stories one gains from the emergency unit (I actually quite enjoy spending time getting to know strangers there!).
*BMW’s, Mercedes and other fancy cars cover the streets of Josburg (aka Johannesburg)
*They LOVE their fried food—from fish n chips to burgers galore!
In saying all of this, I am excited to share with you that my team will be leaving the “big city” and heading towards Mozambique in the next day or two. There we will be working with Iris Ministries or as many of you might know the founders, Heidi and Roland Baker!! I am SO excited to see the work God is doing through this incredible couple’s vision (make sure to look them up online—she has a few of her own books published too “Always Enough” and “Expecting Miracles”).
I think all in all I am still in shock that I am now in this foreign land—and although I have MANY more stories to share with you (both travels “funnies” and amazing stories of those serving on the field), for tonight, I want to let you know that I am safe and sound, thinking of you all back at home and excited to see what God has in store for team Luminous in Africa.
More to come!!!
