There is a great song by Caedmon’s Call called, Valleys Fill First. It comes off of their Long Line of Leavers CD. The lyrics are as follows:
This is the vally that i’m walking through
And if fells like forever since
I’ve been close to you
My friends up above me don’t
understand why i struggle like i do
My shadow’s my only,only companion
and at night he leaves too
Down in the valley, dying of thirst
Down in the valley, it seems that i’m at my worst
My consolation is that you baptize this earth
When I’m down in the valley, valleys fill first
Down in this wasteland I miss the
mountaintop view
But it’s here in this valley that
i’m surrounded by you
Though I’m not here by my will
it’s where your view is the most clear
So I’ll stay in this valley it takes 40 years
Down in the valley, dying of thirst
Down in the valley, it seems that i’m at my worst
My consolation is that you baptize this earth
When I’m down in the valley, valleys fill first
And it’s like that long Saturday
your death and the rising day
When no one wrote a word,
wondered is this the end
But you were down there in the
well, saving those that fell
Bringing them to the mountain again
Down in the valley, dying of thirst
Down in the valley, it seems that i’m at my worst
My consolation is that you baptize this earth
When I’m down in the valley, valleys fill first
Often we get down on ourselves, when we realize that we are no longer having our “mountain top” experience. We wonder where God is. Why did this happen to us? The truth of the matter is that God is stretching us. We need a perspective change. One of my all time favorite movies is Dead Poets Society. In this movie, John Keating (Robin Williams) challenges his students not to conform, but to branch out and see things from a different perspective. Keating says, “I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way.” As a believer, I try to remind myself that, I should never settle into a way that I think things should be. You want a new perspective? Ask for Gods eyes. That will shatter your vision.
The mountain top experience in a Christian life is a good thing, but it is not where we spend a majority of our lives. We come down. We live in the real world. Do not be discouraged. VALLEYS FILL FIRST.
