Dear All Future Racers,
This blog is for you. I’m about to leave for training camp tomorrow and after two days of packing and taking everything out and repacking and doing that over again and again and again, I believe I have the perfect training camp packing list (I hope… in all reality I may be just as lost as you.) As I was looking at the suggested world race packing list and past racer’s blogs, I felt like things seemed vague and unhelpful. I hope to change that feeling with this blog.
Just so y’all know. I am 5’1, my pack weighs 30 lbs and I am from San Diego, CA, so please take that into consideration when reading this
So here is what I am bringing to training camp:
Most Gear has links to what I bought if you press on it
*ANYTHING HIGHLIGHTED IS WHAT I REALLY NEEDED AND/OR ANY EDITS I MADE TO THIS BLOG AFTER TRAINING CAMP*
GEAR
-
Big Pack
-
I have the Gregory Maven 55 L. I love it so much because the size of it makes it impossible to overpack and it fits me perfectly.
-
I have the MSR Hubba Hubba NX2. It only weighs 3lbs and anyone can set it up. I mean ANYONE. Also get the footprint. Just do it.
- Make sure this is waterproof! Many of my squad mates tents got soaked
-
I have the REI Joules 30 sleeping bag.
-
I just went to REI and told someone what I was doing and they recommended this bag to me. It’s REALLY light and packs up really small.
- I never used my sleeping bag. It was way too hot
-
I have the Sea to Summit Comfort Plus SI.
-
I tried a bunch of sleeping pads at REI and this one was the most comfortable.
-
It weighs a little more than other sleeping pads, but the comfort is worth the weight.
-
I have the Sea to Summit CoolMax Adaptor Traveller Sleeping Bag Liner with Insect Shield.
- Day Pack
- I have the North Face Borealis pack. BRING THIS! NO MATTER WHAT BRING THIS!
-
I HATE MOSQUITOS. That is the only reason I bought this.
-
I do not care what anyone tells you, you need a compression sack.
-
I have the Sea To Summit Ultra Sil 15L.
-
These things are magical.
-
I have my tent and sleeping bag in one compression sack.
-
It saves so much room in your pack. It’s amazing.
-
I have the Sea To Summit Converter Duffel. I find it amazing because it packs down pretty small, but you do not have to pack it down if you don’t want to. You are able to take the straps of your backpack out of the duffle and wear it as if it was your pack. However, all airporters are practically the same color so either patch yours up, paint it, or do something that makes it stand out.
- Make sure you have a rain cover for your pack or that the airporter for your pack can act as something to make sure your pack does not get wet in rain. It rained almost every single day I was at training camp.
Toiletries
(Just go to Target’s travel section for all of this)
-
Toothbrush and toothpaste
-
Mouthwash
-
Shampoo Bar
-
These are literally the best invention ever.
-
They look like a bar of soap, but its shampoo.
-
You just rub it in your hair and it lathers and cleans.
-
It’s amazing.
-
Lush makes it, Amazon has a brand called Ethique that’s great.
-
One bar lasts me about two months. I have thick hair that goes down to my shoulders.
-
Regular conditioner.
-
I couldn’t find a conditioner bar that worked well for my hair
-
Deodorant
- Bring a gel one or one that does not melt…all of mine melted
-
Disposable razors
- bring an extra one for a fellow squadmate
-
Scrunchies…..a million scrunchies
-
Baby Wipes
- Bring enough to share with squadmate. This was the most wanted item.
-
Hand Sanitizer
- Bring a minimum of two small bottles
-
Downy Wrinkle releaser plus
- Bring two bottles of this!
-
Loofa
-
Bar of Soap
-
Face Soap
-
I use Burt’s Bees deep pore scrub.
-
I have sensitive skin and its the only stuff that doesn’t burn my face.
-
Hairbrush
-
Sea To Summit laundry detergent
- I did laundry at camp, but it took forever to dry since its really humid and it rained like crazy. So, do what you want with this info in mind.
