Here are some
popular words and phrases that I heard many times while in Australia.
“How ya goin’,
mate?”: Another way of saying “How are you doing, friend?”
“Gooday, mate”: A
popular greeting
Vegemite: a
popular yeast spread similar to Marmite (in New Zealand), has a putrid smell
and tastes even worse… L
Tea: another word
for dinner
Brekky: breakfast
Troopie: a large
safari-like vehicle that is often driven around the Australian outback
Barbie: Barbecue,
i.e. “Put another shrimp on the Barbie.”
Sunnies: sunglasses
Ginger beer: a
popular soda in Australia and New Zealand; tastes very gingery (I didn’t like
it very much, but that’s just me)
Reckon: to
believe something (we say this sometimes in Oklahoma, but Glenalyn insisted I
include it in this blog since they don’t use it in California)
Up at the sparrow’s
fart a strange way of saying “up at the crack of dawn”
Overall, Aussies
tend to speak fairly similar to the way Americans speak (just with a stronger
accent), so there ya go, mate!
