This past month I’ve felt like I was an undercover missionary (we pretty much were). One night I was praying and asking God to show me exactly what that needs to look like and means. The very next night I was at a coffee shop with Anna after a day of ministry. We were sitting at a table with a few open seats when two Nepali men in their mid 20’s sat by us. At first it was just small talk. “Where are you from?” “How long have you been here?” “Students?” “Students.” “What are you doing here?” We explained we have been doing different work, not saying anything about why or with who or what, but one of the men somehow understood and held up his hands as if to pause the conversation. We tried to go back and explain in the very east Christiany, missionary way, when the other man asked us if we knew about the missionary in India who was just recently killed. We told him yes and began conversation about that. After digging into that, the same man looked at us and asked “Are you christian?”. Anna and I looked at each other, took a breath, and said “Yes.”
Since they started the conversation and were the ones to bring Christianity into it we knew we were not doing anything illegal for one, but also not going against what our ministry asked us to do for their safety.
After that began a long conversation of all of our beliefs. They claimed to be Buddhist but practically atheist (very similar to lukewarm Christianity). Many questions were asked and Anna and I simply were able to sit back, answer them, and let these two men carry the conversation. The Lord answered my prayer in the coolest way. Afterward I found out Anna was praying for similar opportunities also.
The conversation ended. The two men were not saved. But I do believe there minds were opened. Now they have two faces to think of when they think of Christianity. The two men asked hard questions—Why aren’t you mormon? Whats the difference between your God and Allah? How do you know? Explain the trinity. What about science?
Although we did not know the true intentions of these two men, the Spirit was so present, and I had no doubt that moment was ordained by God.
We said goodbye and agreed to meet again the next day. Anna and I were thrilled that God had given us that chance! He placed that right on our laps.
We return the next day. We wait. And wait. Wait some more. They never showed up. I was pretty disappointed. But thats okay. Regardless of what happens with them, it is not my responsibility to save them–only Jesus. God only asked Anna and I to be obedient.
comment below if you have questions! so much happened in that time I wish I could write about it all!
