When asked why he went into the woods, Thoreau responded that it was because he wished to live deliberately.

I feel very similarly about the World Race. So many people ask me why I am choosing to leave my family, friends, and comfort for nine months. Aside from the great opportunity to travel, most people do not understand why I would want to be away from all I know for so long.

I am undoubtedly fearful of the many hardships I will encounter on the race, but I am excited to live with fewer distractions. I know that the Lord has planted something deep within me that He will be growing and blooming on this trip.

By going on the race, I will be reminded what this life is all about. Taking this gap year is going to help me refocus my priorities and equip me with a strong heart and loving attitude for my college years to follow.

I wish to live deliberately. I wish to live a life of serving others and sharing the Lord’s love. I wish to challenge all the worldly habits and commodities I have become so dependent on. I wish to learn to become most dependent on God, and learn to follow the path He has set before me. I wish to constantly fight the plans I have made for myself and instead invite His into action. I wish to avoid mindless following of tradition and habit, replacing it with a strong radar for opportunities of service and connection.

***Update: My route has changed! Now, I will be going to Thailand, India, & Costa Rica!***

I sincerely thank all who are helping make this experience happen for me with prayer, donations, & support.

Be blessed,

Lexi Hatten 🙂
