When we look at one another, what do we see? What do we see at second glance?

This month in Swaziland I met the most beautiful little boy. His name is Brian.

Brian stole my heart. He is so full of joy I knew at first glance that he is a beloved son of God. It wasn’t until second glance that I saw his Cerebel Palsy.

He is 4 years old and lives in the “baby house” of El Shaddai Ministries. He can’t walk or talk and he has a lot of saliva. 🙂 But when I looked at him all I saw was a treasured son of the One True King. He has so much God-given joy it is contageous, when I was around him my heart melted and I couldn’t help but share in his undying joy.

Brian not only gave me his joy, but he also gave me perspective on how I see the rest of the world.

What do I see at second glance?

Do I see people and creation the way God made it, or do I see the disease of sin?

With Brian I saw God’s son first, and at second glance I saw his disability.

Do I look at creation the same way?

Honestly, no. Sometimes I see God first and sin second, but many times I see the sin first and don’t see God until second glance. This isn’t the way I want to live.

I want to live seeing God and his creation first. I want to love people the way God loves them. I don’t want this love to come at second glance.

I pray God would give me His eyes to see His creation. I pray I see Him at first glance, and see the brokenness in the world second.

I pray I would see the world the way I saw Brian. God first, disability second.
