Life-being simple yet crazy, has kept me away from blogging. Certification exams and school assignments combined can be time consuming. However, beyond that I truly feel the Holy Spirit working through me as I start to notice more of the extra comforts that I own and realize life would really go on without them. I’m a very practical person and am not into embellishments and things that have no purpose. However, there are still some belongings- such as my computer, car and room- that I’m starting to realize that if I didn’t have those things I would be able find a way to get around those obstacles. For example, I share a bathroom with one of my roommates and it works out well, granted it’s only a bathroom (toilet and tub); however some people are accustomed to not having to share the simple daily necessities.
When you think about it though, none of our belongings are truly ours and they can disappear in a flash. I used to own a pair of off-brand aviator sunglasses before I left them at a school carnival I helped out at with a college organization, CBL. When I first realized that I had lost them I was devastated- I would wear those sunglasses anywhere and everywhere if I could. However I quickly realized that I have obsessed over those sunglasses too much for the 15 dollars I paid for them. Although they were cute and functional they weren’t worth the worry and “mind space”. Whether the extra comforts are taken from us or we accidentally misplace them ourselves- sometimes it’s not worth it in the end to break down when they are gone. This is one of the many reasons that I’m excited about going on the WR, by being challenged to bring only one backpack and a daypack to live out will definitely open my eyes up to what’s really important in life and not worry about all the extra comforts that shouldn’t take up so much of our time and thoughts. As a result, I think sometimes it’s necessary to minimize ourselves (and belongings) in order maximize our quality of life.
“‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’” -Matthew 6: 19-21
